francisco. of course across the city a lot of these trees starting to come down and workers san francisco's recycling program want to make sure the trees don't end up in the landfill. instead they want to put them to good use, eventually turning them into renewable energy. this is the demonstration just about an hour ago here outside city hall as workers put a couple dozen trees in to the chipper. crews from the recycling contractor will begin collecting people's old trees starting next week. workers expect in the end to recycle more than 500-tons of trees. the manager said all of those wood chips can be burned. the heat turns the generator and creates power. when you put your old tree out on the curb for pick up make sure to take everything off it. >> if the lights and ornaments still on it we can't put it in the chipper, it'll contaminate the load, ruin the product. if it's not stripped of all those things that will go into the trash and to the landfill. we don't want that. >> reporter: if you live in san francisco, you can pit your tree out on the curb starting next wednesday, january

begin with developing news at this hour. san jose police are investigating the city's 46th homicide of the year. it happened at an apartment complex on lewis road off monterey highway and janine de la vega joins us from the scene. janine, we understand police may no who may be responsible -- may know who may be responsible. >> reporter: that's right. they have two adult males detained and they are questioning them and treating them as persons of interests. homicide detectives are here at the sulker breeze apartments. all of the activities seem to be centered around a parking garage. just before 9:30 this morning, they received a 911 call that a man with a gun was at the -- on the grounds. when police arrived, they found a manner in a car shot. paramedics tried to revive him. but he died on the scene. after talking to a couple of witnesses they've determined some sort of confrontation occurred with the victim and two other men. >> what happened exactly, we don't know. we're in the very early stages of the investigation. we do have a couple of people detained and we have the weapon in

, connecticut and 60 miles away from new york city. the school itself has 826 students, kindergarten through 4th grade, young and there is reports of a possible connection between the suspected gunman, ryan lanza, apparently his mother was a teacher at the school and she is reportedly among the dead. we also heard that the gunman's younger brother being held for questioning and there's an active crime scene at that family's home nearby at the suspect's home, neighbors have been told to leave their homes and not have been allowed back in there. one neighbor told cnn, the only neighbor willing to talk described two brothers as troubled. again, that is just being reported from c nn. the area obviously was heavily searched and police were checking to make sure there were no other shooters and we understand that the rest of the schools in the district on lock down for a time to make sure that there was no other concerns and no other problems and even some schools and surrounding districts were locked down. police looking through cars and had tape around one vehicle and investigators cornered off a re
